Matthew (Mateo) P. Banegas, Ph.D

Associate Professor, UCSD

Associate Professor and Co-Director, Center for Health Equity Education and Research (CHEER), Department of Radiology and Applied Sciences (RMAS), UCSD School of Medicine.
Research Interests

Health services researcher specializing in cancer prevention and control, Dr. Banegas employs quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate the intersection of health care delivery and its costs, the social determinants of health, and health outcomes among individuals diagnosed with cancer. His research focuses on two main areas: (1) the association of socioeconomic risk factors with health and health care outcomes across the life course; and (2) health system strategies to identify and address socioeconomic needs.

Currently, Dr. Banegas leads a research group analyzing the burden of patients’ social and economic needs, including financial hardship, employment and insurance trajectories, housing, and food insecurity across the different stages of cancer—from diagnosis and treatment to survivorship and end-of-life.
